Dutch Vitpilen 701

So time for the 30.000km service:
Started by taking the tank of to get access for the valve clearance check:

Checked the clearances, 1 inlet and 1 exhaust were out of limits, but luckily I could swap those two shims out, to get both back into spec 🥳

Cleaned and reoiled the air filter (K&N)
Engine is closed up again and tank is back on.
Took of the chain and sprockets and did some cleaning.
The front sprocket nut was only held on by the lock plate 🤐 could remove it by hand after bending the locking tab.

New rear sprocket (aluminium 41tooth JT, less than half the weight of the steel sprocket)

Cleaned the inside of the swingarm:

Next up:
Clean and regrease the shock linkage.

How exactly do you regrease that?
Just take it apart, clean the bearings and stuff em with fresh grease.
It's on page 2 of this topic, post #25:

Took the rear shock out of the Husky today. Plan was to fit the original shockspring to the Duke R shock. But unfortunately the inner diameter of the original spring is 2mm smaller compared to the Duke R spring.

Shock will be going to a suspension shop for a service and a heavier spring.

While the shock was out I cleaned and regreased the shock linkages.

I'll take the forks out tomorrow. They will be going to the shop as well for some adjustments and a service.
While the fork is out I'll check and regrease the head bearings.

More progress today:
Put the bike in the skylift to remove the linkage:

Everything on the bench ready for cleaning/inspection/regreasing:

And back together again with fresh grease:

And installed on the bike, everything torqued to spec and torque seal applied:

New front sprocket, and new chain installed:

And finally the front sprocket cover and chain guard back on:

Next up: headstock bearings and oil and filter change.

Did 333km yesterday no leaks 👌🏻

But when I took of the front sprocket cover I was greeted by this:

It's now back on again, retorqued, and lockplate hammered flat more than before.
I'm going to keep an eye on it. If it keeps coming loose, I'll go for an undampened sprocket and lockwire it to the nut.

Without questioning your skill, how exactly are you torquing it...

With a quality (expensive) torque wrench which has calibrated/dependable accuracy, or with a basic (cheap) one with questionable accuracy?

And of course with a fresh-ish bottle loc-tite 243?

Mid range torque wrench, which gets checked at my workplace. So I'm pretty certain that's OK.
The loctite is not fresh, but not ancient either.

It's a very common thing on 690's according to the Internet, and the original sprocket was loose as well. I'm pretty sure it's not me or the way I work/tools I use.

Someone told me that grease helps...

I normally apply regular grease to the teeth of the output shaft, before I put the sprocket on

The same person told me the problem is when it gets loose it wears the output shaft.

Which torque did you apply? In the German manual is written 80 Nm and but in the English one 90 Nm. I stumbled about this delta with @Max Kool some weeks ago.
Anyway I changed and dismounted my front sprocket(s) several and they were always tight. I torqued them with 80 Nm and Loctite 243.

What difference are you expecting from a non dampened sprocket regarding the loosening?

My manual says 80Nm (official cd bought from Husqvarna) 😅 it's on 85 now.
I greased the splines, always do.
I'll torque it to 100Nm if it comes off again. I was surprised to see 80 in the manual, my 990 was 100 as well.

An undampened sprocket is usually full of holes, so you can lockwire it to the nut to stop the nut from coming loose.

The Italian sprocket is dampened and with holes.

Strange that all the manuals are different.

The 100 nm is in this one (english):

Looks like I have the exact same dvd, but with a different manual on it 😅
My dvd:

80Nm. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But I'll definitely torque it to 100Nm if it comes off again. I'll get a new lock plate as well.
