I'd like to try that new BMW 'Maintenance free' (supposedly) chain that's just appeared in the press recently. Hopefully it will be available in a size suitable for the SP401.

That’s actually a Regina chain and you can bet they will become available at some point.

I'm not sure if the food industry chain is the O-ring type. It is available in different sizes though. I do fancy having a go at making my own chain, maybe one day...
Here's hoping that Regina offer their chain in the right size for the 'Pilens!

Alot of stuff is shared between the BMW 310 (or whatever its called, the littlest one) and the 401s, so you may be in luck.

So I need a bike specific sprocket for the vitpilen? After searching every sprocket I see is bike specific but there is nothing for the vitpilen. Closest is a Duke 390.

Well I just ordered a 15/42 set of sprockets and the husqvarna branded stand set. The front stand comes with a vitpilen 701 specific pin. Hopefully it’s compatible

The brake hose may be in the way under the lower triple tree (it is on the Vit 701). Easily fixed.

lol. Chain sizes are standardized, and brake calipers are shared between many bikes (sourced from third party specialized suppliers). So yes.

As this is a gearing thread, have any of you noticed drastic changes to the field mileage when changing setups?

Fuel mileage? No not really, but I don't do long stretches of freeway.

It's typically between 50 and 60 mpg...

1 tooth down in the front on the 401 is about 23,1% decrease in mileage. 78 mpg to 60 mpg.

Combined, twisties 70%, highway 10%, freeway 10%, town 10%, average speed 40 mph

Have you encountered this problem? I just had a look and it looks pretty tight. I’ve never used a triple tree stand so I have no idea how much clearance you need. Looks like I can just unscrew the house mount from the triple tree though. Doesn’t look too difficult if I had to remove that.

I don't have a front stand (I typically hoist my bike from the attic in our garage), but I saw it a while ago and thought "that is stupid".
