Turn signal fault

Hi all. I have this sporadic issue with my 2018 701 Vitpilen where the turn signals will stop working. When this happens, the dash light even stops flashing.

So far my limited investigation has led me to something being amiss in the wiring in the rear cowl. This morning while in fault, I had the bike on the rear stand with the cowl removed, I turned the ignition to on (without starting) and turned on the left signals (which weren't working) and I moved the large plug that had a green wire loosely wrapped around it. Just moving this plug and surrounding wiring seemed to have brought the signals back to life. According to the wiring diagram, this plug might be some option for an alarm system?

Has anyone had this issue before? Any suggestions on where to look from here? I have the official wiring diagram and it doesn't look overly complex, with only the relay (which I haven't bothered to investigate yet as its in an annoying location under the tank) and a 'diode' part of the circuit. But the behaviour noted above seems to indicate that it might be a wiring issue?

Thanks in advance!

Possibly a broken wire in the wiring loom around the headstock, or loose connection in the same area. You are close, just keep moving the cables about to get you in the rough area, then its down to using a multimeter to check each cable.

So I’ve inspected everything I can so far and still unable to locate the fault. I had the whole front headlight assembly off and checked all the wiring. While it was in fault, no amount of movement of any loom was consistently affecting the turn signals at all. They would just randomly come on or off, even without any touching of the bike.

When in fault, all of the switch gear controls still work too; horn, high beam.

I’ve ordered a replacement turn signal relay as that’s really the only thing I can think it might be. If it were a wiring fault I’m certain it would be blowing a fuse as all lights go out (including the dash indicator).

New relay arrived today and before I installed it I ran a test of turning the bike to ON with the indicators on around 10 times in a row. Around 7 of those attempts the indicator did not even light (either direction). Installed the new relay and ran the same test and it worked in both directions, every time, so ran it for another 10 and zero failures.

So it seems to have been the flasher relay, which was my gut feel. Glad that's over!

@talondnb - im having the same issues.. not anfuse issue and indicator switch is clean… im guessing its the relay also, but i cant seem to locate it. Where did you find it on yours?

The turn signal relay is under the tank. You can prop up the tank enough to access it without completely removing it. Removing it would make for an easier replacement though, since it sits on this annoying tag on the frame.

See this post for rough location - https://hqvadventure.com/forum/threads/dutch-vitpilen-701.18/page-5#post-9180 - relay is roughly below where that bolt anchor point is on the top of the frame.
