Dual disk

After asking you I realized there are a lot of differences between Svartpilen and Vitpilen. I think the only thing I figured out is that I could use the 790 Adventure hub. But, the 790 Adventure spokes are thicker than the Svartpilen 701 so I either find another compatible rim or somehow work out some custom spokes. Then comes the fork problem. I was thinking that I could use only the bottom fork shoes of the 790 adventure and keep the fork legs of the Svartpilen 701, but although both are 43mm I see that they have a different clamping system. There are plenty of options when it comes to brake disks/ calipers/brake lever. But basically the rim, hub and fork cause the most problems. It seems like a very complicated process and as much as I like the look of two front brake disks I don't think I could put it all together.

True, I had to get custom spokes from Buchanan to make the set up work, as well as having the 790 hub turned down. I used the 790 fork lowers in the vitpilen uppers, but I don’t know if that would work with the svartpilen

@Actionabe after doing some searching , I found out that the front lowers of the Vitpilen 701 fork legs are the same as Svartpilen 701 ones. So I might use the same setup as yours for the front fork. I must dig further 😁

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your experience. I completely agree with you that adding dual discs to the Vitpilen really changes the look of the bike!
So I’m going to start the modifications as well. I’ve just ordered the 790 Duke fork. I have a few questions, if you don’t mind helping me, please.
- Which brake discs did you install? They look like the ones from the 1290, but those usually have a black carrier and yours are gold?
- Also, why did you write: “thankfully I don’t have to mess with the line to the ABS pump because getting that line installed was seriously the hardest part of the project.”?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi,

Let me know if you have any other questions. As I mentioned before, I did this modification on my personal bike so can’t vouch for its safety or that it will work for you. I would have a mechanic check out your build to make sure it’s safe and good to ride, especially when messing with suspension and braking.

I assume you are talking about the mag wheel iteration, Your correct, at first I used 1290 disks that I painted bronze and then I ended up finding a couple cheap stock 2018 701 rotors so I swapped to those. The 1290 centering hole does not line up on the wheel good like the 701 rotors do.

Since the 701 uses a one piece front brake line you will have to get a custom brake line made to run two calipers. The problem is getting the end installed on the ABS pump. There is no room and it was incredible difficult for me.

Thanks for your quick reply :)
I almost made a mistake; I was about to buy the 1290 discs, so I'm going to buy a second 701 disc instead for better alignment of the center hole.
I had planned to use custom custom brake line made. I'll take a closer look at the hose connection point on the ABS.
For the master cylinder, I saw that you chose the Brembo PR19 RCS, which is adjustable to 19x18 or 19x20.
I don't think I'll go for that model (a bit too expensive for my project).
- Would you recommend a 19mm? And for the lever stroke, 18 or 20? On the model I'm planning to buy, the stroke (18 or 20) isn't adjustable, so you have to choose it from the outset.
Last question:
- Has the ABS ever been activated since you've been riding with the two discs, and did it works properly?
Thanks !
Marc

I would probably go with a 19mm master because I like how it feels but it’s kind of up to you, the 19 will be more on the “squishy” side and the 20 more on the “wooden” side.

I don’t thing the lever ratio matters, to me it’s more of a gimmick and I don’t mess with it much lol

I have had the abs activate, but due to the added caliper and volume I would not be comfortable saying the abs is functional. You would have to figure out what pump is on it and if it can handle the volume of two calipers. I just ride it like it does not have abs, I considered deleting the abs but it would have been more work…if you can compare the abs to what is on a duke 890R you might be in the ballpark.

Thanks for the information.
That's a good idea to compare the abs to what is on a duke 890R. I'll check that !
On a completely unrelated note, since I see you like the original project and the nice finish, have you already considered the possibility of opening up the airbox like in the initial project with the K&N filter exposed?
I'm really keen to try this modification this winter.

I did think about it, it would be a lot of work though and then I would have to dyno tune it. With the airbox lid off the stock setup is already so good. If I was going to remake anything I would focus on trying to get the lines and bottom of my lower fairing better.

Hello,

I'm in the process of assembling it. The wheel fits perfectly with the axle and spacers on the 790 fork.
However, the 790/890 stanchions (Inner fork tubes) are 35 mm shorter than the Vitpilen stanchions.
But, once the fork is raised, the height difference is only 7 mm. (the internal mechanism with the spring of the vitpilent recovers height)

If I raise the fork up to the cups, I gain 5 mm (see photo). So the difference between the two forks should only be 2 mm :)

Did you get the same measurements?

Thank you !IMG_0517.jpeg

That’s quick progress! I don’t remember what measurements I had when I installed it but this is how much my forks stick up. IMG_6075.jpeg

Out of curiosity, why didn't you install the 790's fork shoes on the Vit stanchions to keep the OEM fork height?

Damn... how cool would it be to do this on the Svartpilen 701 too. But I don't think I'd give up the 18" spoked wheel just to be able to do this dual brake disc mod 🤔

You don't have to. You can lace the 18" rim to the double rotor hub.
@Actionabe had to do this, but he used a 17" rim instead.

Edit: Fix typo "room >> rim"

I finally finished installing the second disc. All that's left is to attach the front fender.
At the same time, I started opening the air box and installing a KN filter (like the original prototype). This is also a major modification.
