The Vit 701 suspension thread

So y'all know I'm the SAE15W oil guy. This made a big improvement for me compared to stock. In general I was happy how my bike/forks behaved, but I still had a wish. It still felt a bit insecure mid stroke. Like a front end up/down wallow. Like the front and rear weren't balanced.

I'm like fk it, I'm experimenting anyway. So I changed the fork oil again, this time to Spectro SAE20 (from SAE15). Same amount of oil as came out. I'm perfectly happy now. It feels firm, but not stiff. Better matched to the Nitron rear. Most of the brake dive is gone. Highly adviced again.

and no, it doesn't rattle you fillings out of your teeth

I get ya, and what I did is far from scientific and more a kludge from an era we still had damper rods. Your way is absolutely preferred.

That said, it works wonderfully well before reshimming the stack in the cartridge. By that point I'd completely replace the stock cartridges.

I don't know by heart @Manuel and I don't have an assistant at hand. I do know I measured these values after I installed the shock (and they were within range). I even double checked these values with my suspension guy.

Oh, wait, you got a Nitron R3 too? Didn't it come with a booklet and setup instructions/settings?

(en als dat makkelijker is, ik spreek Nederlands)

Ik zal na de winterslaap een meetlint opzoeken, weet zo uit m'n hoofd niet wat het is.
Nu weer over op Engels, dat is voor de rest van de leden wel prettiger.

I recently changed the fork oil to 10w, and it made a noticeable difference in how the front feels under compression, hard braking feels more controlled, and the overall feeling is better, however, rebound feels overdamped, even at 0 clicks.
I wonder if using different weight oil on each leg would have any negative effect on the fork? Has anyone tried this?

Nothing wrong with running different weights since each leg has a different “job”. Pretty sure multiple people on here did it and was what gave me the idea to do it on my bike, I want to say I did 7.5 in the compression leg and 5 in the rebound if I remember correctly but it’s been a little while…

Thanks for the reply, I guess I should have asked this before actually changing it. I could have saved half of the 10w for the next service.
Rebound wasn't as bad as compression with stock oil, it wasn't great, but it was not bad.
I'll give 7.5 W a go to see if it's a good middle ground.

My suspension guy has found some compatible springs for the fork. They are Ohlins 08622-80, same diameter as original ones but slightly longer. He removed some shims to compensate, and he put heavier oil.
I am quite happy with it, but my rebound is now one click from fully closed due to the stiffer springs.
He said we could do much better with some valving job, but it will be an expense for an other day!
But suspension is definitely the best money we can spend on our bike, what a difference from stock...

No , No , I have got a ktm duke 690 R 2017 shock , mixed with a Svartpilen 90/190 spring on my 2020 Vitpilen 701.
Did you have to modify the Svartpilen spring in anyway? Also have a Duke R 2017 shock and looking for a stiffer spring. Seems to me that the Duke R spring has a 61mm diameter whereas the Svartpilen spring is 59mm.

Seems that the Duke 390 has the same fork spring length as the Vit 701 (345 mm), but 8.0 N/mm instead of 6.0 for the Vit. Also aftermarket 9.0 N/mm available. I haven't been able to find out if the diameter is the same though. Has anyone tried or ruled out Duke 390 springs for the Vit?
Not a lot of fork spring options available unfortunately...

Not the spring but the preload collar has to be machined down 2 mm to fit.
and works just fine On a stock shock.
svartpilen 701 spring 90/190/59
preload 15 mm.
low speed comp. 20 clicks out.
high speed comp. 2 turns out.
rebound 15 clicks out.
free sag 5 mm. Rider sag (80 kg.) 35 mm.
works fine for me…..
Great, many thanks! Is your weight with or without gear? I’m about 80 kg without and approximately 90 kg ”track day ready”.
