Miss Shifts, (she's) My Every Day Thing

Things went along swimmingly until i tried getting the clutch basket nut off.

For anyone wishing to do this mod. do not use DO NOT USE a fucking rotor holder in these holes, jam it against the swingarm and then use a breaker bar. you WILL ruin your fucking inner clutch hub. anyways, my bike is ruined and i'm waiting on a replacement inner clutch hub to come in the mail.

i mean, that fucking nut is REVERSE THREADED correct? man that fucking 88.5 ft/lbs of torque (+ loctite) is insane to break and not a fucking joke. taking an impact wrench to it tomorrow to finish the damn job

If its still not willing to be tamed, heat may help.

Impact is often safer. I hate prying shit around small and precisely machined bits. I don't know why those would be reverse-threaded. Nothing rotates on the same axis.

It says it in the manual that its Left Hand Threaded, 88.5 ft/lbs (120nm) with locktite.
And that a clutch basket tool is required for both removal and replacement.

So, my stuff arrived. At after a refreshing Iced Tea I decided to get er done.
First thing I did was go rodding around to get it really warm.
I didnt drain the oil, i just layed it in the side and opened it up. This time the gasket stayed intact.
When it came to taking the reverse thread basket nut off, I learned as joeinfro did that the fancy clutch tool is a POS/bad idea, and stopped as I could see it want bend the basket.
Then I grabbed up the 3/8 inch impact, put it in 6th gear and one rip took care of it.
The shift kit was straight forward at that point, and I installed it with a new screw and washers.
Putting the basket back on with the torque wrench was a little more involved.
The Rekluse looks like new after 8000 km.
Threw in some new clutch springs while I was at it, and buttoned it up

Havent gone for a spin yet, did start it though and finding neutral was like butter.

Here... the evidence: 😎

So I took it around a bit, and here are my impressions:

It works, better.

Actually surprised at the difference.

It just goes into gear faster, smoother, and for sure.

Definitely worth the 4 hours to change it.

So... I noticed some oil... then had a closer look... cracked my cover.

Its the screw with the hollow dowel spacer thing.

Anyone know what could cause the cover to crack like that, or what could be done to prevent it again?

did you drop it? how did you remove the cover? did you use a hammer or otherwise try to wedge it apart? also, did you use a torque wrench set 8.9 lb/ft of torque? (i confess i snapped a bolt within my case by setting it to 12 lb/ft, misread 12 nM as lb/ft)

also, the gasket you have there looks frayed. did you reuse your gasket? i mangled my gasket and had to cut a new one

Didnt drop it, reused the gasket initially.
Canged it to a new gasket today after seeing a little oil on the floor and some oil splashes on my exhaust.
With the new gasket it got worse, so I took it off again because I thought maybe the hollow dowel was not in all the way or something, and put it back on again.. and it was worse... which was when I noticed that it has the small crack.

When I remove the screw it doesnt leak on the floor...

Check the cover mating surface is completely flat? Or maybe there was a particle or something that held the cover up?
Or maybe just a bad cover that had a flaw in the casting...
Might be able to JB Weld it until a new one comes in. Do you have JB Weld in "Unspoken Origins"?

In your photo above, the gasket does look torn. If there was no gasket material under half of that bolt, that might have been the problem...

Ill look more closesly when the parts arrive.

The other day I remember thinkin, that gasket doesnt look bad at all, maybe Ill try to get away with it, and see how long it lasts...
...answered that hundered dollar question pretty quick.

honestly that cracked clutch case looks like a really expensive problem :((

you can try to salvage with some gasket maker.

i made a few mistakes reassembling my clutch but ended up being able to finish it out

Judging by the amount of oil on my pipe and back tire/wheel, I will probably need to clean the rear break too, not sure if the pads can be saved...

...just need to make sure to figure out what caused it before I put a new one on.

Thats what I was thinking too, so I just rechecked the calibration of my torque wrench using 3, 5, and 8kg of weight and it is right on for all three.

I will have to continue looking.
