One of the flaws of the Vitpilen 701 is the very short rear hugger.
Apart from powerbronze there is no option Vitpilen specific option to extend the rear hugger.
The powerbronze is quite expensive, and before I knew about it, I already found an alternative hugger.
I learned from some guys riding 4th/5th Gen Duke 690's that the 3rd Gen 690 hugger is a lot longer and fits without problems.
Since the Vitpilen is closely related to the 4th/5th Gen Duke, I thought I'd try the hugger and see if it fits.
Since the 690 hugger is separate from the chain guard, I ordered the 690 chain guard as well.
You'll need the following parts:
75604050000 Mud flap 08 (the hugger)
75004060000 Chain guard
72210079000 Bucket (2x)
0025060086 HH collar screwM6x8(2x)

You can't use the original mounting bolts for the hugger, that's why you need the two buckets and 2 screws.

The chain guard can be fitted using the Vitpilen hardware. You just need to run a 10mm drill through the rear mount in the chain guard. The hole is 9.5mm or something and the shank of the original bolt is 10mm. So you need just a hair of extra room there.

Total cost for these parts in Europe is <€50 so about half the price of the powerbronze extension.

A Dutch KTM dealer had a Christmas discount of 20% on everything and free shipping, so I got it for €40ish 👌🏻

If you are willing to chop up your original hugger/chain guard you could keep you original chain guard and just buy the hugger + hardware.
That'll save you about €20

That looks a lot better. Also means that some of the Duke carbon items available will likely fit too...

Nice!
The bigger hugger protects the shock better from dirt and stuff thrown up from the rear tire?
That's the plan

The carbon huggers and chain guards meant for the 3rd-5th Gen dukes should fit without problems.

nampus, that looks good, so there is some hope of Pyramids carbon hugger fitting the Vitpilen.
Those parts are so inexpensive in Europe.

Good call on the KTM parts. I just mounted the Powerbronze unit today, and while it looks like it’ll work fine, I’m not sure it’s worth the extra money. You have to drill four 6mm holes in the OEM part, and they provide push pins to hold it in place. I couldn’t get them to work, so I bought some 1/4” x 1/2” black button top bolts and nuts instead. The Powerbronze may provide a little more protection, but is that worth the extra money? Only you can decide.
BTW.....if you decide to go with the Powerbronze, it mounts MUCH easier if you take the OEM unit off and do the drilling and mounting on your workbench.

It does look tidy, and the closed sides probably help keeping the back end a bit cleaner compared to the KTM part.
But they just made it to expensive if you ask me.

I agree. Although it does come with two Powerbronze stickers, so there’s that. ;-)

Many thanks for the parts list and the guide :)

I ordered the parts a couple of weeks ago, and today I put them on the bike. Very easy to do, and will hopefully help with keeping the bike a little bit cleaner if I get caught out in the rain. The parts were around €60 up here in the north. The two buckets and screws cost almost €10 in total from the KTM spare parts dealer, could probably be found much cheaper in a hardware store, but still very nice to know the parts ordered would fit :)

I'm in the process of replacing an R&G tail tidy and an Arrow exhaust pipe that was on the bike when I bought it, that's why all the tools are out :) I'm going to use the original reg plate holder for now until I can find a good looking solution for putting the turn indicators next to the rear light. But I'll probably still keep the stock fender/reg plate holder on the bike even after relocating the turn indicators. It does serve a pretty useful purpose 😉

Cheers!

I mounted the larger rear mud flap right after the first rainy ride. With the original one the damper is totally abused by dirt.
Now it stays clean even in the dirtiest environment.

I used only the Duke 3 75604050000 Mud flap (only 23 € in Germany), the two 72210079000 Buckets, the original screws and cut the original chain guard.

Hi all, Just a heads up, Pyramid plastics UK, now do a hugger extension for the Vitpilen 701, adds some good length to the stock unit, makes a big difference, all for 30 pounds...
Pu the Pyramid extensions on front and rear, it's dirty weather in the UK and they save radiator and rear shock from the shast. doddle to install

Now does the dirt foul up the cooler and the rear shock causing damage & shorter service life... or it is only the looks of "dirty" that are eliminated?

Can you post some pictures of the extensions on your bike, please? I would like to see the benefits of the extensions on a dirty bike. ;)
