Husqvarna 401 Oil Change

So, after some googling today and browsing on a few forums I’m lead to believe that oil capacity should be about

1.7L without oil filter or bottom screen removal

1.9L with oil filter replacement and bottom screen removal (i.e. complete drainage)

So plus 200 ml. That would’ve made my fill about 100 ml too much. So I started it up again and let idle for at least 15 mins and it was at temp (coolant at least) and the fan was going.

And yes, oil level was just above top marks. I extracted 100 ml and I’d say it’s now perfect. Right in the middle. I’m at the cottage (on an island doing bike maintenance haha, so can’t go for a ride to truly verify).

So at this point, 2.05L was definitely too much and it seems 1.9L is right on the money.

extracted with this fella (~60 ml, with hose prolly 70-80 ml) but I measured the extraction in a measuring cup, the vacuum pump extractor would’ve been too fast and I wouldn’t know how much I removed.

So, after getting smashed by a large woman on a CBR I decided I must need an oil change...

No chunks in the screens, and a "safe" amount of metal on the magnets, lookin aight if you ask me...

New plugs and screens this time and a KTM oil filter, o-ring on the filter cover was still flexible so I reused it.

I really like the smell of 5100 Motul 🙃

I put "roughly" 1.7L in (because thats what the service manual says and "roughly" because my 4L container has .5 liter marks on it...)

Pretty sure that its not a science on these bikes, and that somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 liters is prolly not gonna light it on fire or anything...

Oh totally agree. But I like knowing so I don’t have to think the next time haha.

At the dealership they use one like this with a line drawn on it in Sharpie.

The tip fits inside the oil fill hole so they can walk away while it fills.

If that snap ring comes out of the sight glass recess...
Does the glass come out and the oil leak?
Hmmm, you have to push it through from the otherside, the rubber seal is a tight fit.

Might or might not leak... crank case normally has negative pressure, right, from the vacuum hose on the valve cover i guess...

Either way, imma go look at that split ring as gain though now that you mention it...

Correction...haha, I cancelled my order and got this instead. Very nice markings IMO.

I like the KTM one, but ya, like you said, no markings. I suppose it doesn't matter...but whateves, just a measuring cup right.

My two cats (brother and sister) look the same as yours haha.

That one does look nice, and they have a 2 liter one... I may order that. Would make refills in one pour on a couple of my bikes.

Do a web search for 'long spout measuring jug' and you'll find heaps of them much cheaper than these prices. $5 at my local auto parts store.
For some strange reason these are more readily available outside the USA... I think maybe the typical American won't measure this stuff.

Need to top off the oil a bit (~2800mi on the odo) and am curious if any of you experienced ppl know how many mL might be the difference between the min and max markings in the sight glass?
