So, I was looking into 701 spare parts and see that the paper air filter is incredibly easy to find and much more affordable than any air filter I ever bought...

...have to go like 200000 km before a k&n paid off...

Good to know its a cheap replacement, especially since the air box lid is so frequently forgotten by inexperienced mechanics. 🙈

When Cross Referencing the Car Air Filter which should fit the 701, I found some alternatives
(None of which I have tried personally, so...)

For instance, this dry foam type:
Pipercross: PP1777

I have been thinkin through the airbox lid removal in combo with a fuel dongle...
The pirate video shows that the lambda value at low throttle / low revs - without the lid is "richer" than with the lid...

Just compared two different Car Filters vs. the Stock filter.

The price of the car filters is about 20%
% of original, and because it comes with 2x in the box that calculates to about 10%...

I noticed that the pleat count is less than the original and when held up to a light the orginal lets less light through.

Not sure what that means as far as performance or filtering is concerned.

Here is the proof:

If the stock filter is good enough for the 1090 Adventure, it’s certainly good enough for a 700cc imho

And I doubt if you would measure any gains/differences with any filter as long as you don’t change the airbox.

I guess where I was going is that the car version is for small low rpm passenger cars, has like 50 pleats vs the KTM's 60 pleats, and the KTM's appears to have a thinner paper material and which lets less light through.

I found this interesting as the name on the KTM filter and the one on the car filter on left is the same...

So, some more airfilter action, here are 2 options which are designed for the bike next to the stock one:

And here is the Car Version next to the Bike Version:

And here the "light test" with reduced exposure to see the difference in filter material:

In conclusion the car filter is basically a sport filter the bike, in paper format;
1. Less restrictive / Less filtering (light test)
2. Cost Savings per Filter (shopping test)

has anybody thought about a mod of the filter cage like this?

pirate racing mentioned that they will prove a mod, but never againe heard a word about it.. iam curious if this has no impact or they just wanna sell their bmc cone filter?!?

Well, when you install a modification to emissions relevant parts, you instantly made problems for yourself.

I am surprised that mine came with a battery cover...

.. and when the designers come up with "interesting" shapes like this, I would guess that its already "optimized"... otherwise why...

Sorry guys I thought about an additional option to optimize airflow when riding without lid.. but it's not the right thread. Mea culpa
