I may be wrong as I do not have a newer version of the 401 but is the intake not open to the elements now? I thought the filter is in between the snorkel and the intake. The cover is for access and making holes in it without filtering them will just suck in dirty air and render the filter...

On my 401 those rings on that screen are magnets set into the plastic. If these flakes were ferromagnetic they would be stuck to the rings like a porcupine.
