Has anyone on here messed with their gearing ratios at all? The stock set up makes it a bit gutless to me as i'm mostly riding in a city not down highways. The stock ratio is 16T in the front and 40T in the rear, I want to swap the rear Sprocket for a 44T which would be the same as dropping one tooth in the front without having to cut or buy a new chain. Has any body done this? Were there any problems?

I've got a 42 on the rear, I'm not sure if a 44 would fit with the standard chain?
I'd go for a 15t front for the same result without the risk of your chain being too short.

Have 15 front big difference, but yes you need to shorten the chain. You could go 15/42 if city is your domain and then you don't need to cut the chain

Yup, I did.

The stock 16-40 is way too tall for any decent riding in city traffic. Initially I changed it by going down one tooth on the front, which already made a significant difference. It still felt a little on the tall side though, so I changed to rear to a 42.

Super happy now and the Vit 701 is still not geared too short or anything, just perfect.

FYI, with the stock chain you can run the following gearing:

16-40
15-40
15-42

(and maybe even 16-42, I haven't tried that option)

yes going for 15/42 when changing the drive next time. Not only city traffic for me, but not going down highways for long either.
I shortened the chain (15/40) due to that I didn't get much room for any more tightening of the chain (svartpilen 701)

guessed it would :) since 15/40 easily do +180km/h not that it's fun to ride that fast.
70-80 on a dirt road is more to my liking

I'm running 15/42 (Svartpilen 701) and I'm very happy with it, no regrets. It was one of the first things I changed, so I could keep the original chain.

I've got 16-42 on the stock chain. Still had some room left on the adjusters.

Yes and no, it doesn't need much adjustment. (I'm at 10k km's and have adjusted it twice I think.)
Mine does show spots of rust a couple of days after washing it or riding in the rain.
I've never had this on DID chains. No experience with other brands before this one.

I wish they made a stainless steel chain for my bike, I'd swap out the one on my bike immediately.

Yes, but they do make stainless steel chain, mainly for the food production industry. So it must be strong enough to be useful. I'd try it out, my bike isn't hugely powerful, so maybe such a chain might be OK?

I'd like to try that new BMW 'Maintenance free' (supposedly) chain that's just appeared in the press recently. Hopefully it will be available in a size suitable for the SP401.
