Writing on the wall?

On the upside. My favourite bike (Nuda 900r) was only made for a coulple of years and now they are very collectible. Maybe the 801 might get cult status too
 
I don’t think it will get the Nuda following since it seems to be such a hard sell.

Depending on the market and the insurance prices next year, I might swap it for a 1390R. I do love the 801 but it’s fun to buy and upgrade bikes.
 
Checked with my local dealer, for every 50 sold KTM bikes, they sold 1 Husqvarna. They said it's most likely because it's cheaper and customer favours more aggressive looking KTM bikes, on the showroom I saw many younger drivers sat on KTM's than Hqv. I also think the Dutch people like the orange since it's their national color 😆
Husqvarna it's just missing the mark and not selling well.

I think it’s pretty obvious why it’s not more popular.
The 801 was 40% more expensive than the 790 when it released. It’s a hard sell to motivate that difference just because it’s built in Austria and has a better fork.

At least here in Germany, the difference wasn't that big. 2024 the 801 was EUR 10.900 plus EUR 500 ancillary costs; the 790 was EUR 9.000 plus EUR 450 ancillary costs; the 801 was about 20% more expensive than the 790.
Regardless of that, I don’t think the price difference is or was the main issue. Now that there is hardly any price difference left, several people buy an 801 because it’s kind of a bargain compared to the original list price; nonetheless sales figures still aren't particularly good.
I think it's more the Pilen-design that is quite unique / special and doesn't appeal to the masses. KTM’s more aggressive "insect" design is also quite polarizing and doesn't appeal to everyone taste, but it does resonate with many especially younger riders; I think that’s why many opt for a Duke rather than the 801.

Alongside the bikes, also a BMW Z3 Coupe (from 2000) sits in a garage as a summer toy; I like it mainly because of its quite unique design; back then it was produced in extremely limited numbers compared to the Roadster (and discontinued after a few years of production) as it also didn’t appeal to the masses; now it's a rarity.
If the production of the 801 will be discontinued, that doesn’t make it any less interesting to me; quite the opposite; it might even confirm that the 801 fits my somewhat “odd” taste… ;)😁
