I swear that thing will quickly slap the top of my foot multiple times sometimes during the shift. Is this normal?

Also, shifting down through the gears when coming to a stop is usually unreliable. It just misses gears or pops into neutral.

Anyone else experiencing any of these behaviors?

No, not really.

Just make sure the bolts of the adjustable shift rod are tight, and the lever is adjusted to your preferred toe position. Maybe your bike has some play somewhere in the rearset/shift rod?

Interesting! I'm still such a wrenching noob... I didn't really notice that it's adjustable. I'll take a closer inspection tonight! Thanks!

EDIT: I do feel like the throw to advance a gear is too tall. Smaller clicks would be superb!

Relocate the shifter tip to the closer-by position, adjust the shifter down a bit. That should fix it.
