(Ir)Regular Maintenance

After my favorite check, pulling and twisting and banging everything and then hitting the shiney spots with wax, I finished up the 15k km service with a fresh hiflow oil filter, some motul 5100 and went with the red paper air filter.

So, after being told that my bike is garbage and that I should buy a new one because it has 25k kilometers on it, I figured I would break loose with a fresh tune.

25000 km
- new spark plug and coil pack.
-idle relearn (10min Idle)

45 minutes total

Couple tips if anyone does this:
-used electrical tape on the frame next to the coil pack to prevent scuffs on the paint
-didnt unplug the tank, just lifted it up to the throttle side as the hoses/wires seemed to want to go that way and then used a couple zip ties to hold it there (one to the handle bars and one to the frame by the coolent reservoir)
-tank almost empty helps cause it weighs less and doesnt slosh so much when moving is around

Interestingly, the exhaust smells completely different.

Which made me think... when the Brisk Lamborghini Desing Plug supposedly burns the fuel way faster by igniting it "more better"... (plenty videos can be found)... then assuming less unburned fuel reaches the o2 sensor, the o2 sensor wants the engine to adjust the fuel trim
... would this give more fuel, or less fuel?
 
Well either way, I was recently getting a solid 70 mpg when mashing on it.

Then initially for the first tank and a half of fuel after the plug/coil change I was getting 55 mpg.

Then at the tank after that I was getting 75+ mpg.

So it obviously did something, and the ecu obviously noticed and also did something.

Bottomline: I definately recommend changing the plug at the first signs of a the deterioration of economy; cost of fuel vs cost of a plug - my new plug bought itself pretty fast.

(Incase there was the question... I only tank up with the fuel out of my garage so when I measure changes its still the same batch of fuel)
 
Could this all just be the ecu learning after the reset? Maybe you are just slowly getting back to where it was before the reset?
 
Frankly, I find this amazing... I've changed plenty of spark plugs in my day. On my two strokes, it could mean the diference between running or not when they fouled. But I've never sensed a difference in a 4-stroke.
That said, all my experience is on carburated bikes.
 
Kinda reminds me of one time i changed plug wires in a different vehicle with 4 cylinders to ones with thicker insulation and it made the rattle noise from the horn at idle go away.

This was also my experience until last week. My Honda 4 stroke whipper snipper decided to not run. It would start and if I jiggle the throttle on/off fast enough it would stay running but fail as soon as I gave it full trigger. First thing was to replace the fuel line, which is known to kink in a particular place and starve the motor. No fix. So get online and up comes the next common problem, change the spark plug.

I pulled the plug and saw it was black, so dressed up the spark surfaces. The motor still wasn't happy. Got a new plug, motor runs fine. It's the first 4 stroke motor I've ever had that messed up its own plug.

Conversely, my mower with a Suzuki 2 stroke motor is now over 25 years old and I've only once changed the plug. On 2 stroke bikes I carried spares all the time.
