So I before going on my trip I wanted to know how much tread I had left lol. I searched high and low and there was no definitive answer for this. Also, different size STR tires have different depth (I think). Anyway, I had about 4.5 mm on my tires so I opted to get a new set for my big trip. The measurement below is after riding home 60 km. So we can be pretty sure this is pretty much "new" tread depth.

Front: 110/70-17 ~ 6.5 mm
Rear: 150/60-17 ~ 8 mm

And I wound up keeping my old tires. I figure I'll get a tire balancing machine and throw them on myself. The whole process looks pretty simple. After my trip I believe I have more tread on my old tires now than the new ones haha.

Did you get a spare set of tubes? (Or keep the used ones?l
Haha. Well, I only had 4400 km on the tires when I got them changed. I didn't even think to ask if he put new tubes in but I doubt it.

When I put the old tires on after I wear these ones out I'll get some new tubes in there. How long do the tubes usually last anyway? I know they're cheap too...I should got them to put them in but slipped my mind. Was too excited to get new rubber lol.

There are some who say every time, or every other time, every year, every two years.

Normally when the tire is off, you have the tube in your hand and can inspect it. At that point its always good to have new ones.

Yup. I figured at 4400 km I was probably okay to go a bit longer on them. But ya, when I put the old ones back on I'll be putting new tubes in (or even if I buy a new set and put them on -- all depends on if I take another longer trip).
