Engine oil conundrum

Several times when I have checked my 2021 401 Svartpilen oil level, the sight glass has been empty. Each time this happened, the bike had set long enough for all the oil to drain back down. The first time it happened, I was stupid enough to add oil, only to have it way too full the next time I rode it. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a specific procedure I'm not following? Thanks for your help.

p211 on the manual says to check it at operating temperature.

Right after I come home from the ride, I hold the bike upright and look in the window. It has been in the range every time. 550 miles on odometer.

Thank you very much for your answer. I just can't imagine how the oil gets drawn back up into the engine as it cools; I never saw that before.

I have had the same experience. When it’s cold there is no oil in the sight glass, after warming it to operating temperature it is spot on in the middle of the sight glass.

The oil expands as it warms up.

You need to measure right after you get off the bike.

I use the rear stand to avoid crushing myself; again.

Here is what it looks like at operating temp about 30-40 minutes after I incedentally added around 70ml to much (finished the bottle...).

yes this happens - oil will heat up and fill the glass, when it cools its gone
