Hello everyone, hope you guys are all well and riding!
SO I've had a bit of bad luck a few weeks back - riding along residential roads and slow speed and the engine just quits. Would not start up again. The only warning I think I noticed would be a loose clicking noise. But it was only for a second or 2 and the engine quit pretty much right away. Fortunately - I wasn't far from home and it was easy enough to run back, get the truck and load her up. Since I had no garage and I had no idea what this new issue could be, I took it to the dealer. That was roughly 2 and a half weeks ago.

I decided to call them up today and see if there was any news. I was told the water pump gasket failed and coolant leaked into my engine causing it to seize. They are in communications with the dealer trying to get my engine warrantied under what they say is "good will" (my bike is way past warranty terms) and that once the oil coolant has mixed the engine is basically no good.

I even asked if draining all the fluids and reupping and of course replacing the gasket would fix it and they said no. Am I wrong in this? Would like to hear some feedback.

Worst case scenario is no warranty and I have to buy a new engine which I would be expensive!

Damn, yeah I wish I had a bit more warning. Maybe it could have been saved. At least the dealer is working with me to get it warrantied. Let's hope it does. I can't imagine having another comparable bike. Will update as I know more.

Wow, that stinks.
Interesting that it "seized"... I'm wondering exactly what that means? Did the cylinder overheat the the piston seized to the cylinder walls?

Normally the coolant washes all the oil off the bearings. But 701's/690's have a history of gasket fails leading to complete engine destruction.usually it's the head gasket. But I'm willing to bet that's why they are even considering trying to get it warrentied.

He didn't say exactly. Just seized.

I wasn't aware of this issue specifically but at this point I am not surprised. Just hoping it does get warrantied and I can get back on the road. If not - maybe no motorcycles for awhile for me. Or go with something more reliable.

I try to put it out of my head because it is depressing. I just put more focus on other activities now that I can't ride the motorcycle. And the dealer has been helpful - they don't have to push for a warranty, they could have just told me my engine is toast - pay up for a new one or take the bike. No sense in pissing them off.

Your points are totally solid. I've just had some bad experiences where if I didn't hound the dealer nothing happened. But if you have a good shop waiting is totally cool. I'm hoping they come through for you!

Thanks! Yes I hope I get a working bike a the end of it all. If I have to pay for a new engine - I might - depending on the price.
I can't think of a comparable bike. This bike has what I want except for durability/reliability. I can't think of any other sub 400 lb, 75ish HP good looking bike.

Let's hope the dealer makes it easy for you, but If it comes to needing to get your own engine... there are lots of them on eBay, especially if you include the KTM 390's in your search. It's probably quite possible to put it in yoursef if you are handy and have some garage space.

So a mini update:
Called the shop again and they are still going back and forth with Husky.
Basically from what I have been told is that they will not warranty the complete engine but will consider covering the cost of parts required to rebuild the engine - labor will be paid by me.
The shop has to provide the list of parts required which means they still have to pull the engine completely apart to see everything that needs replacing which they haven't done yet because they were waiting on Husky. They have only confirmed that the water pump gasket has failed which caused coolant to leak and hence the shaft bent.

Will post when I know more.

Labor adds up fast.
Is it imaginable to try and find a good used replacement engine (ebay)? I'm betting a KTM 690 engine might plug right in?

I've looked. There are a few used engines but they are older generation and I don't have enough knowledge to know if it would be as simple as replacing the engine. Would there be any issued electrically? I am going to keep an eye out and the dealer is still trying to see if they can get an engine because it could be cheaper than the labor of replacing the parts. We shall see. It's a waiting game for now.

Good news! My bike has returned! Dealer really pushed for a new engine and Husky sent one! All I had to pay was labor for the engine swap. Picked it up today - gotta try to break it in before the season is over. Everything feels tight and new.
