Combination Instrument problems

Hello everyone,
After a while I've managed to revive a dead Svart with new engine.
Everything works and the bike runs.
However:
-TC and ABS lights are on
-No speedometer - says error
- No odometer - stays at 2248 miles and doesnt move
- I can't seem to reset the combination instrument- can't change the clock or anything else.
Any ideas where should I start?
Many Thanks,
S

The ABS ring & sensor is how the ECU senses wheel speed for the speedo, as well as communicating wheel speed to the ABS module. Without the ABS ring sensor working you’ll have malfunctioning speedo, odometer, ABS and Traction Control.

Double check the ABS sensor position and its wiring.

Thank you very much Ayune !
I am assuming you are referring to the ring and sensor in the wheels - front and back- correct?
Everything you are saying makes perfect sense - I am just trying to clarify what would be wrong with the sensors
What would be wrong with it's positioning. The wiring is fine Front sensor is new, back looks intact
Thanks very much and cheers!

For the sensors to work they need to be positioned and wired correctly. Positioning should be a no-brainer because they directly mount onto brackets that hold them the right distance from the rotating rings. The wiring, however can malfunction in a number of different ways: broken wires, swapped wires, corroded connections, etc. you mention that the front wiring is new; why was it replaced? If it was damaged it’s possible that it affected not just the wiring segment that was replaced. Check it all the way to the dash using a multimeter if you can. Also check the ABS fuse if you haven’t already.

Hey Ayune,
Here is a bit of a back story - I got the bike at auction- completely cannibalized and missing everything. I slowly put it back together ( new engine) and now it runs.
The front abs sensor was cut , so i got an used one from ebay. The rear was in place with no visible damage. The whole wiring harness is also new(second hand) and everything works so i'd think it is fine as the rest of the bike talks to the ecu. I tried to test the sensors just now, but the wires are pretty deep in the socket. I feel like I am touching the prongs but both sensors give me a read out of 1 on the multimeter so either they are both toast or I am not testing them correctly. I even tried swapping them on the bike and did a lap just to test , but nothing changed.
The rings and positioning is fine as they can only mount on the wheels one way.
Looked at the fuses and they are both fine.
Could the ABS module be the culprit?
Would it affect speedometer and odometer ? Also - any idea how to test it?
Thanks again for all your help - I feel I am very close, but something is just not right
Best,
S

Hey there, sounds like quite the project so far.

I tested the resistance of my front wheel speed sensor and got 377 kohm between the two male pins on its connector (pics below). The black Bosch connector is under the front center triangular plastic cover next to the flasher relay. If you’re confident that you’re taking a measurement from those two male pins, and it says “1” (units?) then the sensor may be toast. But I’d first confirm the measurement.

Note: The 377 kohm value will not change if you spin the wheel; it’s not a magnetic sensor, but a hall-effect type which relies on a voltage being applied to the sensor while the bike is running. This voltage creates a magnetic field which is affected by the spinning ring, and this disturbance can be sensed by the ECU that’s applying the initial voltage. Simple! 🙂

Ayune - You've gone so far above and beyond with your help - it is very , very much appreciated !!!
This forum board has been very helpful and I hope that thread will help other people as well.
Update.
I looked at the ABS module connector - unplugged and plugged again and everything came back. Speedometer works an TC lamp went off
I am down to just ABS failure as opposed to CAN ABS Failure that I had before.
I just rode around the block to see if I have speedometer and I do. Let see if the ABS failure message goes off after a while- I just cant ride it further now.
Once again Thank so much for your help and direction!
Cheers,
H

That’s good news! If ABS doesn’t come back after a ride or two try re-seating the module connector again, it may be just a dirty contact or two on that connector.

Remember that the ABS light will show until the bike is moving. Anything above walking pace should be sufficient.

ABS relies on getting a reading from both wheels, I think the speedo only needs the rear wheel. There might be a problem with the front sensor.

If you have had to replace brake parts it might be the ABS unit not being happy. Check if the system needs bleeding. ABS units sometimes need a software app to open the valves for proper bleeding.
