I’ve been slowly getting my Vitpilen 701 ready for touring so thought I’d post my progress in case anyone needs some inspiration. This bike certainly isn’t made for long distance touring but in my mind that challenge only makes it more fun. This post will be split into a few parts because of a limit on images uploaded per post.

The plan is for the bike to be capable of easily doing roughly 1 week long trips, and camping at night.

Luggage so far is made up of a Kriega US30, Kriega US20, hardcase, SW Motech tank bag.

Kriega US30 and Kriega US20:

This will make up my main luggage storage, a total of 50L. These bags are completely waterproof dry bags that are universally mounted to any bike. I have the 30L one mounted on the pillion seat, and then the 20L one attaches to the side of the 30L one. On the other side of the 30L there are enough attachment points that it allows my tent to be strapped on there.

SW-Motech Tank Bag:

This is the ION one tank bag which gives 5L of storage, which can be expanded up to 9L when unzipped and extended. Not waterproof itself but does come with a waterproof cover. No ugly mounting straps with this one, it is very securely attached to a bike specific tank ring which is bolted onto the fuel cap. The bike specific mounting ring needed for the 701 is TRT.00.475.16000/B.

Side hardcase:

This is just a generic sidecase from a hardware shop, it will give me roughly 17L of internal storage. The case is completely waterproof also lockable so I can have somewhere to store things that is at least somewhat safer. The case is attached to the Unit Garage luggage from which is made specifically for the Vitpilen 701. When I bought the luggage frame I also bought the quick release system, this is what is now on the hardcase that allows it to mount to the luagge frame. To mount the quick release system onto the side case did require some drilling to mount it, then some extra filing to fit the lock barrel and then silicone around all the bolts to make sure the case remains waterproof. The luggage frame also gives wider points to strap the rear of the Kriega US30 dry bag down.

I still need to sort out fuel and water storage. I will probably get the 6L fuel cell from Desert Fox and strap it on top of the Kriega US30 when needed, unsure about the water storage.

Other mods done to the bike so far include replacing the exhaust and catalytic converter with Leo Vince parts, power commander 5, BMC air filter, canister removal, bar end mirrors, quad lock phone mount and oxford heated grips.

I replaced the clutch slave cylinder with the Oberon performance one, I didn’t have any clutch issues but did it just in case and I’m glad I did as when I did the swap the original one was already showing signs damage and soon to be leaking.

There is still some extra work to be done including swapping the gearing for a 15/42 set up, wireless phone charger for the quad lock phone mount, upgraded shift spring and most importantly a relaxation of COVID restrictions so I can go riding!

Impressive set up!
Kriega stuff is awesome! I have a us-20 and two us-10's plus the same tank bag.
I don't do camping trips, so I got plenty of storage from those.
I've also got a 39 liter topcase, but I still need a rack for that.
This was a couple days in luxemburg:

Us-20 on the back and the Daypack on the tank.

Nice Dabomb. What's the weight of that hard side case? I think the Unit Garage side rack is rated at 1.9kg / 4.2 lbs, as I just purchased one for my Svart 701 last night. If your hardcase has some decent weight to it, maybe consider running a rokstrap around it and under/over your seat bags as that might alleviate some of the weight those Unit Garage welds are holding up. I'd hate to see you lose your load! I just mention this because I've had SW motech welds fail on a similar style rack for my R9T, as well as Wunderlich welds fail too.

For my Svart touring set up, once I see how this Unit Garage rack holds up, I think I'm going to go with an over the seat set of saddlebags to keep most of the weight off of the rack on on the passenger seat.. I've got a few options, but I think maybe the Mosko Moto set up might be a good fit for the Svart. I've definitely got to get some paint protectant film over the right side plate on my Svart though, otherwise those bags will likely scratch the hell out of it. I'll post up some pics once my rack comes in.

I've been told that the weight limit for the rack is 4-5kg by Unit Garage. There hardcase itself is actually really light, inside of it I plan to put bulky but light items like my sleeping bag, sleeping mat and jacket/pants thermal liners.

Those look really good - nice set -up!
Are you using any throttle lock device? I like some kind of windscreen on long trips, and I've had good luck with Givi products, not sure if they work on the Svart.

Thank you for the info on the ION tank bag and mounting ring part numbers. Very helpful!

I've also been searching for the right windscreen. It seems Puig is the only manufacturer that makes a screen specifically for the Svart 701. There's a member here that mounted a Dart screen designed for a Ducati Scrambler, with some minor bending of the mounting bracket. But that was on a Vit. Looking at his photos, it seems the Svart and Vit might be slightly different up around the screen mounting area, so I wasn't confident enough to try the Dart setup on my Svart. I just ordered the Puig screen this morning from Pyramid Plastics in the UK. I was told it won't be available in the US until March of 2021 or later.
From the folks that have responded to me about a screen, is seems the Dart is the nicer looking setup, and the Puig is the more effective, albeit ugly, setup.

For water storage, I’ve used the Platypus water bladder. It has a drinking hose that works pretty well while riding. On hot days, I’ll freeze it the night before, wrap it in a towel or some sort of insulation, and it stays pretty cool most of the day.
