Hi all, I am helping someone change their 701 Head Gasket and wanted to know if anyone in the forums have done this before, specifically if this was possible to do on the bike or not? I have done this on my FE350 on the bike but not sure if there was enough clearance on these... Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm not sure about the head gasket, but even adjusting the valve clearances is a pain. Removing the valve cover is quite difficult as there is not much room. Maybe these photos will give you an idea. Anyway, I've posted the Svartpilen 701 repair manual somewhere on this forum. Look for it and see the official instructions for this job.

Thanks for those pics, that confirms id have to drop it. Ive swapped the cams on the 701 before but its been so many years I forgot just how tight it was. I really appreciate the help! I was hoping I could tilt it fwd but the front mount piece of the frame sticks down in front of the motor near the exhaust ports so that wont happen either.

I had to do the head gasket on my Vitpilen and there is no way to figure it out with the engine inside the frame.
So bad news, you have to pull the engine out.
