I tried the above gearings on my own bike. They work with the stock chain. Didn't use any math (this time).

I figured that was the standard procedure...
Is there anything that goes against using a longer chain than needed?

Other than not getting the tension right you mean? As long as the adjuster slots allow for it, you should be fine I guess.

I guess having the length of chain that fits multiple front sprockets is nice incase you want to do a quick change and dont want to pull the chain off.

The chain length is at least correct for:

16-40
15-40
15-42

I've got 16-42 with the stock chain
