There is a sensor in the clutch that overides start in gear without having clutch depressed right? Is it the sensor in the clutch or a side stand sensor? If the sidestand sensor was the issue wouldn't my display say sidestand down all the time?

You can start in gear with the clutch pulled, you can start in neutral with the sidestand down. I don't think you can start in gear with the sidestand down even if you have the clutch pulled in. This is from memory one day when I had a WTF moment.

Another way to say this is I believe the sidestand switch logic invokes the neutral switch, not the clutch switch.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure you’re right. I did that once as well. It was worse on a Ducati Monster I had. It wouldn’t start or run with the stand down.

Ha ha, I have to laugh at the following.

My buddy said his headlight didn't work on his Aprilia.

He turned on the ignition and showed me, yep, no headlight.

On the way home it dawned on me and I texted him, that the headlight on my bike doesn't go on until the motor is started.

He texted me back after he started the motor and said, headlight works.

LOL, DOH.

He was all mad because he'd just taken it in for valve service, $1000, and he told them to check the headlight. He was going to storm down to the dealer and give them heck.

I saved him some embarrassment. I told him, all's well that ends well.
