Mmm, I think they have put too much bodywork on. It looks too heavy up top, not suggesting it is heavy but visually it looks bulky. I think more streamlined plastics would have been better. It’s a shame as many people have been wanting a 400SM and I think KTM have not done it well.

Weighs about the same as the 690 SM and about the same as the 401s.

I can't say that I'm not compelled by this bike. The roads here are ideal for it.

The price is amazing.

Therein lies the problem. Price is great and I guess if that is your limiting factor then it is a good idea, but when you can get a 690 with real nuts and it weighs the same what is the point. They should try to get it down to 300#, then it could really be a hoot. I played for an afternoon with a group of guys who used 100cc supermotos on a cart track and it was the most fun I've ever had on two wheels.

The 690 is $12,999.

Hahaha. I had no idea it was that much. ok, so this thing is less than half the price that's pretty great.

Who the hell would pay 13 grand for a KTM thumper? No wonder they are bankrupt.

Telling you the price of the 690 was all that needed to be said.

That being said, I think the 390 would be a blast just as the 401s are, possibly more so.

CycleCruza, who owns a 690 SM thinks the 390 SM might even be better.

I get it on owning a Supermoto but that thing is not aesthetically pleasing to me. I have always loved the Supermoto look, part motocross part street bike and I have no doubt in the hands of a professional SM racer you can do all those backing the rear end in, peg scraping, constant wheeling out of every corner things. But in the real world to own a Supermoto it would have to look like one.

The Suzuki is nice and would likely be much better build and last forever.

Still missing the Supermoto mark a little though, but very close, more dual sport with 17s.

Ducati have gotten closer…

albeit at a much higher price but I doubt if the promo bikes had massive rear sprockets like the KTM SMC390 has on it. I know it is a a very different animal but if I were to own a Supermoto it would have to look the part and do the business.

This….

Aprilia is was my dream bike when it came. Price, service intervals, parts availability and reliability worries means had I bought one (unlikely) it would have either bankrupt me or I’d be dead or in a wheelchair.

When I test rode my Svart the salesman said, ‘can I interest you in a Supermoto?’ Directing me to a Husky 700SM. ‘No thanks as I don’t like broken elbows was my reply.
I stick by that answer.

Having said that, if you want one go for it. I’m sure you will love it, just do not think you can ride it like in that promo video I it’s standard form… KTM marketing videos strike at your inner Hooligan….

I have two buddies with supermotos.

One has a Husqvarna 701, the other a converted KTM dirt bike that he bought from a race team at season's end, won a AMA title. It's not street legal but he rides it on the street with a plate from another one of his bikes and ridiculously tiny turn signals. 450cc, 250lbs, 80hp.

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

It is, but it's also about items of interest to those who have a 401. Obviously, the 390 SM is just another derivative of the Duke 390 as are the 401s.
The Svart/Vit, Duke, Adventure and RC may all use the same engine and some other parts with each other but for the most part they are all different class bikes with enough unique parts that significantly separate themselves from each other to put them in their own class just like a bike with a larger cc is in a different class from the smaller cc bikes. It's quite the reason why the lower cc classes are in a different thread in this forum.

This post should be in a different thread not the 401.

There are features on other derivatives of the 390 platform that may find their way to the 401s. For instance, the new Adventure 390 has cruise control. It is pertinent to point such things out. If it were impertinent the moderators would have removed it.
