2020 Vitpilen 401 - Exhaust Backdating

u/DonutOne hit me up on Reddit and said y'all might be interested in my findings. Here's the short version; I put 2017 Duke 390 OEM exhaust on my 2020 Vit 401 with no issues whatsoever. This means all exhaust across all makes and years will interchange, neat huh!?!

I can go over the details in writing or just answer any questions anyone has after watching the installation video -

hello, where did you buy the swap exhaust system? Did it still work (quality of materials) ?

Just did this swap on my 2022 Svartpilen. Found a complete 2018 system on eBay for around $100 and wrapped it. I deleted the charcoal canister system and rerouted a few wires/tubes to clear the 2018 system.

I don’t run any muffler, just the stock pre-chamber and a stubby exhaust tip from Alibaba, the sound is great and not too loud at all with the stock cat and pre-chamber alone.

(I initially replaced the 2018 cat with a Coober de-cat pipe but it was too loud. Swapped the cat back in and it’s perfect.)

Final configuration w/stock cat (don’t wrap the cat!):

$10 Exhaust tip comes right from the pre-chamber, simple and weighs almost nothing:

Exhaust tip is for Duke 390 and has some dB-killing features: https://m.alibaba.com/product/1600776819575/REALZION-Motorcycle-Exhaust-Escape-Hidden-Muffler.html

Thanks fopr you answer mate,

Can you send me a pick of where did you located it now? And can you explain a bit o like tutorial how did you removed it please because i'm a bit lost. It's imposible to relocated it without this kit?

Thank for you help,

There’s no room to relocate the valve and tubes, our bikes are just too compact. By using the SmartMoto kit to remove the canister, valve, and related tubes you’re only left with the task of routing the tank vapor tube down to the ground. The kit comes with good instructions for this part.

Next, for the vapor tube task, I found that the nearby tank overfill tube already goes to the ground, so I connected the vapor tube to it under the tank using a Y-connector that was part of the tube/canister/valve mess that I removed. So you only have one drain tube now, and you may need to adjust its routing to keep it away from the hot catalytic converter.

It’s very tight under the tank and it took patience and some long pliers to attach the hoses to the Y-connector. The pics below show the Y-connector under the tank and the routing down to the ground.

Hope this helps.

Thank you,

I have ordered the kit and will receive it next week. I will get back to you if I have any questions when installing and relocating the tubes. But I think your photos and explanations will be enough. Thank you very much for your help my friend.

Regards,

Just thought I'd add my experience doing this backdated exhaust.
Firstly, I kept the the purge valve. Only retorted and reconfigured the original hoses and y split. Also a drain or coolant hose had to be zip tied out of the way. Secondly, I had issues fitting the cat. It was resting against the frame. I cleared this by prying down on right side lower mounting sleeve and also hammering the upper mounting tabs towards the right side of the bike. This gained 3-4mm of clearance along with slightly twisting the cat. Lastly, after test riding the bike my butt dyno tells me that it runs better at lower rpms but actually feels like acceleration has slightly suffered. I didn't disconnect the battery or anything just did an oil change and replaced the stock exhaust with a stock exhaust from 2018 svart. I kept my original o2 sensor aswell
