See the second post in this very thread: https://hqvadventure.com/forum/threads/42t-sprocket-weights-for-vitpilen-701-svartpilen-701-and-duke-690.650/post-6403
Interesting! I’ve kinda blown my wad buying and weighing these sprockets, but if someone is willing to document chain weights I for one would love to see the results.
We clearly can’t count on manufacturers’ claims!
An example: The Honda GB500 was also a market failure, and is also highly collectable now.
It cost $4,200 new in 1989. That's equivalent to a little over $9,000 in today's money.
Only in the last couple years have totally mint examples started to command that sort of money again. I bought mine...
I bought a Vitpilen 701 to go with my R1250GS. They compliment each other nicely, and there's never really a ride where it's hard to choose between them. The Norden also seems different enough to justify having both.
That said, if you know you're done with the Vitpilen and your only question is...
Frustrated that everyone claims to be "the lightest" without publishing actual weights, I purchased several of the main sprocket options for the 701/690 in the popular 42 tooth size and weighed them myself.
Results:
Stock 2018 Vitpilen 701 steel 40t: 1.084 lbs
OEM KTM steel 42t (part...
Follow-up:
It was red (permanent) thread locker. I tried to use a propane brazing torch to apply enough heat without damaging the bits of the motorcycle around the sprocket but the sprocket damper started to char and I was worried about the frame paint, clutch slave, and other important bits...
Worth mention: The factory service manual does not say to touch this bleed valve when bleeding the clutch or flushing the clutch system. Or for any other reason as best I can tell. They say to do it all via a push through the slave and drawing fluid from the master resevoir:
I just made the...
I did. And the dealership confirmed using red thread lock, which will require a torch to remove. I’ve got that, so now I’m just waiting on a 27mm socket. (And a 32mm socket for our back.)
Not quite the quick and easy afternoon project I’d been looking forward to.
I'm convinced. I even have the parts. Now how are y'all getting the original sprocket off?
I've read the factory service manual and it doesn't have much to say. The stock toolkit has a 27mm stamped wrench that seems to fit, but there's no way to turn it without the handle smacking into the...
Anyone on here have experience with the various products that allow you to remove the catalytic converter on a 701?
Some of them have a "bulge" in the middle, while some go straight through. What's the point of the bulge?
Has anyone done actual dyno runs that show what power gain / loss you...
Glad to help, and thanks for the inline images!
Apologies for the crooked pics, he didn’t quite seem to expect me to take pictures of all of ‘em so I did it in a bit of a hurry.
My dealer was kind enough to show me the recall paperwork:
