Weird noises

Hi Guys,

The bike makes strange noises when riding with the throttle closed, typically while slowing down. At first, I thought it was some kind of aerodynamic noise coming from around the headlight, fork, or something similar. Also because I wasn’t able to replicate it on the stand.

With the throttle open, it disappears. I figured maybe I just don’t hear it over the engine. But today a friend told me he could hear it when riding behind me. He described it as if the bike were creaking. To me, it sounds more like a wind rustle on the bike.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Guys, just an update for anyone else dealing with that...

I tightened the chain (btw, measuring with that shape of swing arm is "fun") and it became even worse :-) Then I washed the bike and cleaned the chain, used Motorex oil, and it stopped. It probably won't stop surprising me what noises a chain on a bike can make.

Hey there!

That's an interesting one! Since it only happens with the throttle closed and disappears when you're on the gas, I'd check a few things. First, look at your exhaust system - sometimes baffles or heat shields can rattle or resonate when there's no engine load. Also check for any loose fairings, panels, or brackets that might vibrate at certain RPMs or speeds.

The chain could also be the culprit if it's slightly loose - it can make a rattling or creaking sound during deceleration. Give it a check for proper tension and lubrication.

Since your friend heard it from behind, that makes me lean toward exhaust or something in the rear section of the bike. Take it for a test ride and try to pinpoint where it's coming from if you can.

Let us know what you find!

Hi @Snorkel,

Thanks a lot!

I adjusted the chain tension. But the sounds were still there.

The solution was to clean the chain and lubricate it with Motorex oil. It sounds weird, but guys in the shop told me that the original lube is sticky and it might sometimes happen...

Cheers and ride safe! Thanks!

Hi

Excuse a bike noob here. But I was going to check the chain tension on my bike and I found the instruction in the manual a bit confusing.
Maybe someone can guide me a bit how to measure. A real world picture on where to measure would be helpful.

Yes, the description from the manual was also to me at first quite head scratching; but finally it's quite simple.
