I finally saw a Triumph Speed 400 for the first time. It's funny that I hadn't seen one before now. I live in SoCal where you see EVERYTHING. I've yet to see one at the local dealer who is also a Husqvarna dealer.

AWFUL! Don't let the YouTube vids fool you. It's DINKY. A 401 dwarfs it. I like small bikes but it's 3/4 the size of a 401.

There's no way anyone with any sense would choose one over a 401. A 401 is a way greater value and has a real presence.

The Triumph is a wallflower by comparison.

I was tossing up between the Trumpy 400 and the Vit 401....sat on both...test rode both.
In the end i went with the Vit cos i wanted to get away from those old school classical lines to something sleeker, more aggressive. Money was also a factor as the Vit was considerably cheaper.
I gotta admit though, did i make the right choice

To each their own but from looking at the specs, the 401 is a lot more value/cost than the Triumph. At least where I live. I used to ride a Thruxton, so I don’t mind Triumph but I won’t be spending my money on a new Triumph with todays prices.

Yes, a 401 is a way better value. No suspension adjustment and no quick shifter on the Triumph.

The quick shifter on the 401 is trash. The suspension adjustment is nice

The quick shifter is not perfect but it works. I rarely use it for the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts unless I'm really revving it out where it works better. But, it works great for the rest of the upshifts. At least, on my bike, the downshifts are perfect in all gears. I see it as valuable and usable.

I've seen reviews of other much more expensive bikes with great quick shifters that you can short shift and automatically rev matches. Yes, the QS on the 401s are not that.

I don't mind it...mostly for upshifting.
It's good for dragging off cars at the lights or when i'm busy and can't be bothered......certainly better than nothing.

I agree with you regarding size. I guess it also would depend on the size / height of the rider - it felt small to me, at 6 feet tall. The 400 scrambler is definitely larger, though obviously a different animal.

For me, the new Triumph trident 660 triple looks pretty perfect. Of course, price wise, it is a whole other snack bracket.

I test rode both bikes, multiple times. The 401 rules for handling, stability, power, gear ratio spread, and tech. The Speed has a slightly squishier seat, which was nice. Oversteer on the Speed is a real problem. Also, at 6 feet tall, I look silly on the Speed IMHO.

Only Soo much you can get out of a single cylinder. I'd rather just get the Trident 660 and be done with it. You won't have to upgrade anything on it except perhaps round mirrors since they put mirrors on it stock unrelated with the theme of round dash, round headlight etc etc

I kept the goofy round mirrors on my Vitpilen for that very reason.

I did get some mirror extenders though, so that I could see something besides my shoulders.

The stock mirrors on the Vit are not goofy and I question if you are even using them not aftermarket mirrors. They are very tall and angeled outward from your body offering lots of visibility. I personally don't like them because they don't look as elegant as the 801 mirrors or other quality aftermarket options.

Not trying to be insulting but are you a very wide person or something? I'm 165lb 5'10".

Agree. The 660 is quite nice, though if this is where you are heading, you might as well go for the Street triple. Better seating position,, lots more power. The Triumph dealer where I live advises that many people get bored with the Trident quite quickly.
