So, I purchased a DNA state 1 filter and installed it and at that point I didn't know there was a stage 2. I tried to buy one but they were hard to find when not as a set and I don't understand why filtering there would even be necessary. DNA even makes a stage 2 that is nothing more that a piece of open plastic. So.. I said screw it and just opened up the existing cover..

And its GREAT.. NO ill effects and it sounds really awesome when you crack the throttle. There is a meaty low growl.. NICE !! And it didn't cost 100$
I may put some filter foam in to cover the holes, but for now.. It is completely unnecessary (IMHO)

I only put holes in the area that was covered by the upper fairing so it looks no different.

I may be wrong as I do not have a newer version of the 401 but is the intake not open to the elements now? I thought the filter is in between the snorkel and the intake. The cover is for access and making holes in it without filtering them will just suck in dirty air and render the filter useless? Like I say I may be wrong, may be worth tracing air path from snorkel to intake just to be certain.
Also you may want to get a fuel X lite to richen up the very lean fuel to air now you have more air going in.

There is a snorkel in front of the actual filter that comes from the front of the bike. Behind the filter is a snorkel that leads to the cylinder.
Drilling the cover only exposes the area in front of the actual filter. The DNA stage 2 filter really doesn't help much.. Plus, I do NOT like the look of the stage 2 filter as it is completely exposed and ugly (IMHO).

The snorkel from the front is not filtered so raw air is coming into the airbox anyway. My main concern doing this is that by opening the airbox, you remove the pressurization that comes from having a leading snorkel at speed ( The intent of this is to get more air into the cylinder as the bike moves faster. ) The pressurization effect would largely be eliminated by opening the actual airbox.

lol... If I am wrong? The side cover is only $8.00 USD.. Dirt cheap..
